UOG Land Grant will be adding sewing into its lineup of family- and consumer-focused workshops and classes, starting with a Basic Sewing & Clothing Repair workshop for adults from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 28.
Extension Associate Clarissa Barcinas will be teaching participants basic sewing techniques, how to use a sewing machine, and how to sew a pin cushion as a first project. Participants are encouraged to bring clothing items from home that are in need of repair, such as a loose hem or missing buttons.
The addition of sewing classes to UOG’s community workshops comes in response to a continuing trend in the community to learn life skills that support self-sufficiency.
“Many families today are looking to be more resourceful and sustainable, and so we’re very excited to be able to reconnect the community with the life skill of sewing,” said Tanisha Aflague, interim director of extension at UOG Land Grant. “It’s not only about making and repairing items, but we hope it will inspire individuals to be creative and reinvent or add value to items they already have.”
With the addition of 12 new sewing machines, UOG Land Grant will be hosting more sewing workshops to come, including an upcycling workshop — creating something new from old or unused clothing — and a sewing class specifically for kids.
Registration for the Basic Sewing & Clothing Repair class is open at https://url.uog.edu/sewing. The workshop has a $10 registration fee, and participants may bring their own sewing machine to use if they prefer.
