Farmers, gardeners, and landscapers in Guam are invited to learn the importance and procedures of soil testing at an upcoming workshop being held by the University of Guam Land Grant. The Know Your Soil, Grow Your Future Soil Sampling Workshop will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, and an identical session from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 18, both at the UOG Yigo Research & Education Center.

“Healthy soil is the cornerstone of productive and sustainable farming, yet many times decisions about fertilizer application, lime use, and crop selection are made without a clear understanding of what the soil contains,” said Christianah Oladoye, soil scientist with the UOG Land Grant agInnovation Research Center. “Collecting high-quality soil samples is the first and most important step toward making informed, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible farm management decisions.”

The UOG Soil Lab offers soil testing services for Guam farmers and residents. Proper soil sampling gives farmers and gardeners a reliable picture of soil nutrient levels, pH, organic matter, and other key properties that directly influence crop performance. However, a poorly collected soil sample can lead to inaccurate laboratory results, resulting in over- or under-application of inputs, wasting money, reducing yields, and potentially degrading the very resource farmers depend on.

This workshop will teach participants:

  • when to sample the soil
  • the importance of accurate soil sampling for farm productivity
  • appropriate sampling tools and equipment
  • proper soil sampling techniques for different field conditions

Registration is free of charge and available at https://url.uog.edu/soil-sampling-workshop. For more information, contact Dr. Christianah Oladoye at (671) 735-2134 or oladoyec@triton.uog.edu.
