February is National Cancer Prevention Month - a time to reflect on the steps we can take to lower our risk of cancer.

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death on our island. Recent data from the Guam Cancer Registry indicate that the most diagnosed cancers are breast, lung and bronchus, prostate, colorectal, and uterine cancers. The cancers responsible for the most deaths are lung and bronchus, colorectal, liver, breast, and prostate cancers.

Although these numbers can feel overwhelming, there is encouraging news. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 40% of new cancer cases are linked to preventable risk factors. Many cancers are not simply a matter of chance. We can take practical steps to lower our risk and lessen the impact of cancer in our lives, families and communities.
