Residents are invited to come get crafty and creative while learning the practical skill of sewing in two upcoming workshops with the University of Guam Land Grant Extension Service. A beginner-level Basic Sewing Workshop will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, followed by a Next Level Sewing Workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 14 on the UOG campus
The classes will teach participants sewing techniques in a supportive, hands-on learning environment with UOG Land Grant extension associate Clarissa Barcinas.
“Whether you are new to sewing or looking to strengthen your existing skills, our aim is to help you gain confidence in using a sewing machine and inspire you to create new, useful items with your own hands,” Barcinas said.
The Basic Sewing session will cover the fundamentals of sewing. Participants will be introduced to basic sewing techniques, learn how to operate a sewing machine, and create their own personal pin cushion. This beginner-friendly session is open to all.
The Next Level session is designed for individuals who already have basic sewing skills and want to expand their knowledge. Participants will learn how to sew a basic mini-tote bag using the French seam technique — a method that encloses raw fabric edges for a clean, finished look.
The addition of sewing classes to UOG Land Grant’s family and consumer science–focused community workshops comes in response to a continuing trend in the community to learn life skills and self-sufficiency.
“Many families today are looking to be more resourceful and sustainable, and so we’re very excited to be able to reconnect the community with the life skill of sewing,” said Tanisha Aflague, interim director of extension at UOG Land Grant. “We hope it will inspire individuals to be creative and reinvent or add value to items they already have.”
Registration for both sessions is open at https://url.uog.edu/sewing. The workshop has a $10 fee. Early registration is encouraged due to limited space.
Participants may bring their own sewing machine if they prefer. For more information,
