PEER MENTORING PROGRAM

UOG First-Year Undergraduate College Students Peer Mentoring Program.

Peer mentors - Are Triton Ambassador Student Leaders.

Triton Advising Center's peer mentorship program strives to encourage and support first-year undergraduate student success by pairing first-year undergraduates with experiences Triton student ambassador leaders who are juniors and seniors. 

The program is designed to build students' self-confidence toward achieving academic success. These peer mentors are committed to supporting and encouraging overall student success.

Many first-year undergraduate college students transitioning to UOG face several obstacles. These UOG student leaders will assist students with academic guidance, provide access to campus resources, and encourage as well as support them to become more active in the UOG community.

  • They are experienced college student leaders who help new or current students navigate their transition journey to college.
  • They are UOG student leaders who are committed to supporting and encouraging first-year students as they transition to UOG.
  • They are experienced student leaders who will provide guidance to new and current college students with academic support, assist them with access to campus resources, and encourage them to become more engaged and well-rounded in their learning environments.
  • Experienced college student leaders to provide guidance and support students with their goals towards academic success.
  • Also, it is a way to encourage new and current college students to strive for their best academically, socially, and personally.

Peer Mentor’s Services/Benefits:

  • To assist first-year college students who face challenges searching for courses, information on degree programs, college division advisors, major/minor requirements, registration process, class scheduling, financial aid available resources, course catalog advisement, and time management through their share experienced and knowledge expertise.
  • To help connect students to other campus resources that can play a role in their success.
  • To help students understand UOG Core Values/Mission and utilize the resources that UOG has to offer which include providing them guidance with campus resources, financial aid available resources, academic support, and career development tools that UOG offers.
  • To help students to navigate (smooth sailing) through their courses and their majors in their academic pursuit, and to address their challenges to make the best possible choices and strive to achieve their academic as well as personal goals.
  • To help students enhance their feeling of connection and belonging to UOG and have them be more engaged and well-rounded in their learning environments.
  • To improve students’ self-esteem which in turn helps improve students’ retention rates.

Program Outcomes

The Peer Mentoring program will help first-year college students: 

  • Navigate their challenges and celebrate the success of their first year at UOG. 
  • Understand UOG’s core values/mission and utilize all the resources that UOG has to offer. 
  • Enhance their feeling of connection and belonging to UOG 
  • Address challenges to make the best possible choices, strive to achieve their academic and personal goals, and improve their self-esteem. 

The Mentors will:

  • Develop leadership and Mentoring skills, become role models with their peers, and promote UOG. 
  • Have influence in the life of the new Triton and build new relationships. 
  • Increase academic confidence in their mentees.
