University and college universities share sustainability gains, challenges

Presidential Summit
Presidents from regional colleges and universities gathered during the UOG Conference on Island Sustainability at the Hyatt Regency Guam to discuss educational matters and propose solutions for issues.

The Presidential Summit on Island Sustainability, held on Wednesday, April 13, provided a platform for institutions to share their plans for a sustainable future.

Dr. Thomas Krise, UOG President, highlighted the importance of continuous coordination on island sustainability issues. He emphasized that universities are vital in achieving island sustainability and the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
 
The panel discussion also allowed each member to share their experiences implementing initiatives to achieve island sustainability.
 
Dr. Mary Okada, President of the Guam Community College, highlighted the DNA of sustainability that has been present at GCC for many years. Okada mentioned that GCC had taken the lead in having the most Government of Guam sustainable buildings on campus.
 
Dr. Patrick Tellei of Palau Community College emphasized the importance of banning plastics on campus to reduce plastic waste. He also mentioned that the college retrofitted its lights, reducing on-campus electricity consumption.
 
Dr. Rosevonne Makaiwi Pato, President of American Samoa Community College, highlighted the value of sharing what works and the need for students to know that sustainability initiatives are happening elsewhere and are effective. She emphasized that colleges and universities can be crucial in building a sustainable future.
 
Dr. Gavin Deleon Guerrero, President of Northern Marianas College, spoke about the college's master plan, which focuses on caring for the community, resources, and people. He mentioned that NMC is pursuing institutional status and has submitted a formal request to National Sea Grant.
 
Meanwhile, Dr. Eel-hwan Kim, President of Jeju National University, expressed his admiration for the presidents of different universities coming together to hold the conference to protect the environment. He emphasized the importance of environmental education, particularly in light of the current climate change crisis.
 

As part of the UOG Conference on Island Sustainability, the summit highlighted the critical role that universities and colleges play in achieving island sustainability.
