Strong passwords are one of the best ways to protect your personal information and university accounts. Follow the tips below to keep your accounts safe.

1. Minimum Requirements

  • At least 10 characters long
  • Include a mix of:
    • Uppercase letters (A–Z)
    • Lowercase letters (a–z)
    • Numbers (0–9)
    • Special characters (e.g., !@#$%^&*)

2. What to Avoid

  • Don’t use easy-to-guess passwords like 123456, password, or qwerty
  • Avoid personal details such as birthdays, names, or pet names
  • Don’t include university-related words like UOG or triton
  • Never reuse the same password across multiple accounts

3. Try Passphrases

Passphrases are longer and easier to remember. Use a short sentence or random words together with symbols or numbers.

  • Example: GreenDragon!Fights@Sunrise2026

4. Store Passwords Securely

  • Never write passwords on paper or keep them in plain text files
  • Use a password manager to securely store logins in an encrypted vault
  • Password managers let you create completely random, very long passwords without needing to remember them
  • They can also autofill logins across your devices, saving time and reducing mistakes

5. Keep Passwords Fresh

  • Change your passwords every 6–12 months, or right away if you think your account may be compromised
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible for extra protection

6. Account Recovery

  • Set up secure recovery options like a backup email address
  • Choose security questions with answers that are not easy to guess or find online
