On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for the Windows 10 Operating System. This means that Windows 10 will no longer receive free updates, technical support, or security fixes. While Windows 10 devices will still work, the lack of regular updates and security fixes will make these devices a prime target for malware and viruses.
Before you update your device to Windows 11, here are some important things to keep in mind.
Windows 11 has higher hardware requirements than Windows 10, so some older computers may not be able to be updated. To see what version of Windows you are running you can get assistance from Microsoft here. You can also view the minimum system requirements as outlined by Microsoft below.
Windows 11 Minimum System Requirements
Processor | 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC). |
RAM | 4 gigabytes (GB) |
Storage | 64 GB or larger storage device. See More information on storage space to keep Windows 11 up-to-date for more details. |
System firmware | UEFI, Secure Boot capable. Click here for information on how your PC might be able to meet this requirement. |
TPM | Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0. Check here for instructions on how your PC might be enabled to meet this requirement. |
Graphics Card | Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver. |
Display | High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per color channel. |
If you are a Windows 10 user, you may verify whether your device is eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11 using the following tool provided by Microsoft: PC Health Check.
If your device meets the minimum requirements to upgrade to Windows 11, you may begin the update to Windows 11. If your device does not meet the minimum requirements, you must purchase a new Windows device. To purchase a new device, speak with your department admin or chair.
Prior to updating to Windows 11, we strongly recommend that users perform a comprehensive data backup to safeguard against any potential data loss during the transition process. Users have the option to back up their device to an external storage device or to their University OneDrive account.
If you are a Mac user, your device will not be affected by Microsoft ending support for Windows 10 unless you are running Windows via bootcamp or any other means of virtualization.
If you do have a Windows 10 extension on your Macbook, you may contact OIT or your department IT professional on how to update that extension or what actions to take.
