UOG Men's Basketball drops game to MacTech

The University of Guam Triton Men's Basketball Team dropped a 104-88 game to the MacTech Nerds on Feb. 7 in the Triton Men's Basketball League played at the UOG Calvo Field House.

UOG played well in the first quarter, leading 23-19 at the end of the first 10 minutes, but then the opposition took over in the second quarter and took the lead by halftime.

UOG's Logan Hopkins scored 19 points in the first period to put the Tritons in the early lead, but the Nerds came back in the second quarter, scoring 32 points and holding UOG to 15 points in the period as MacTech was up 51-38 at halftime.

UOG battled back to pull within eight points multiple times in the second half, but the Tritons could never get any closer.

Reggie Rechebong led MacTech with 23 points with G. Barrera adding 20 points. UOG's Hopkins scored 38 points to lead the Tritons in scoring, and Ajurrell Grape scored an additional 20 points.

MacTech clinched the second seed for the playoffs while UOG will be the third seed. The Tritons will face MacTech again in the first round of the league playoffs at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17. MacTech is now 3-2 on the season with one more regular season game left while UOG is 2-3.

In the second game of the evening, the Harper Valley Kennel Bulldogs beat the Guam Community College team 103-89.

The HVK Bulldogs led every quarter and GCC was outscored by 16 points in the first half as the Bulldogs were up 52-36 after 20 minutes, but GCC won the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 53-49, but GCC was just down too deep to come back.

Christian Torres led the Bulldogs with 40 points while Ethan Alegre led GCC with 37 points.

The Bulldogs (5-0) locked up the No. 1 seed for the Triton Men's Basketball League Tournament and will face the No. 4 seeded GCC squad (0-5) again in the first round of playoffs at 4 p.m. on Feb. 17.

The final regular season games are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 11 as GCC plays MacTech at 6:15 p.m. and UOG Tritons play the Bulldogs at 8 p.m.

All league games are at the UOG Calvo Field House and admission is free.
