The Division of English and Applied Linguistics at the University of Guam invites writers and artists to submit poetry, prose, and artwork under the theme “Oceania Rising” for the 19th issue of its literary publication, “Storyboard: A Journal of Pacific Imagery.” Unpublished work will be accepted until Dec. 16 via email to storyboard@triton.uog.edu.

Oceania is at the center of some of the world’s most pressing issues: climate change, threats to indigenous rights, contamination of natural resources, and desecration of sacred lands. As Oceania faces these issues every day, the editorial review board of “Storyboard 19” recognized that the voices of Pacific peoples must be central to discussions about how to address these issues, Editor Holly Rustick said. Thus, the 19th issue seeks to “provide a platform for grassroots-to-global conversations and creative expression with the theme ‘Oceania Rising,’” she said.

This call for submissions is open to the public. All submissions must fall under one of four categories: poetry, fiction, non-fiction written in English or any other Pacific language (with translations into English), and visual art.

Possible topics related to the theme of “Oceania Rising” include, but are not limited to, climate change, indigenous rights, bleached coral, ocean practices, plastic waste, conservation, self-determination, rising sea levels, marine protected areas, dislocation of peoples due to climate change, energy sources, contamination, pollution, traditional practices, and island wisdom. Writers and artists are open to submit work based on their creative interpretation of the theme.

“Storyboard” has promoted literacy activity in the Pacific Islands for more than 20 years.
