As the United States Army commemorates its 250th birthday this June, the University of Guam proudly highlights the accomplishments of its Senior Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program, a cornerstone in preparing graduates to serve in military and civilian leadership roles at home and abroad.

The UOG Senior Army ROTC program began commissioning officers in 1982 and has commissioned 625 officers over the last 43 years, each bringing leadership, service, and public value to both military and civilian spheres. Today, the program continues this proud tradition through the efforts of its cadets, cadre, and alumni.

This year, sixteen members of UOG’s Fañomnåkan (Spring) 2025 graduating class were commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the United States Army during a ceremony on May 24. The new officers will serve across the Active Duty and Reserve components, representing a wide range of Army branches including Medical Service, Military Intelligence, Military Police, Armor, Ordnance, Quartermaster, Transportation, and Signal Corps.

"The University of Guam is proud to help develop the next generation of Army officers — leaders who will serve with distinction both in uniform and in their communities,” said UOG President Anita Borja Enriquez. “As we recognize the Army’s 250th anniversary, we also celebrate the Triton Warrior Battalion’s long-standing contribution to public service and professional leadership."

Established on October 19, 1979, UOG’s Senior Army ROTC program commissioned its first officers in 1982. It was later designated as the Triton Warrior Battalion in 1994, a name that reflects the spirit and strength of its cadets. Over the decades, the battalion has earned national distinction, receiving the prestigious Douglas MacArthur Award as the nation’s top Senior Army ROTC program in 2002 and again in 2016.

The UOG Senior Army ROTC experience combines academic studies with rigorous military leadership training. Cadets graduate with bachelor’s degrees while gaining critical leadership, decision-making, and team-building skills. The program also offers unique opportunities for cadets, including paid internships, advanced military training in the continental U.S., annual field exercises, and international cultural exchanges.

UOG ROTC Alumni Spotlight: Leading with Purpose

The impact of UOG’s Senior Army ROTC program extends well beyond each graduating class. Among the program’s more than 609 commissioned officers is 2LT Lidio Fullo, a 2024 Distinguished Military Graduate and the first Senior Army ROTC cadet in UOG history to serve as valedictorian of the graduating class.

A graduate of the psychology program, Fullo was drawn to Army ROTC by a desire to help address what he viewed as one of the world’s greatest problems — poor leadership. "If the problem in this world and its future is poor leadership, then I feel a sense of duty to become a leader of leaders," he said.

Now serving on active duty in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, 2LT Fullo leads a platoon at Camp Casey in South Korea and manages critical communications systems. Looking ahead, he hopes to one day return to Guam to help develop future Army leaders as a JROTC instructor or professor of military science at UOG.

“Leadership doesn’t start when you have the position,” Fullo said. “It’s 24 hours, every single day, someone’s watching.”

As the U.S. Army marks 250 years of service, the University of Guam remains committed to fostering leadership through its Senior Army ROTC program, helping to develop officers who serve with integrity and impact both here in the Pacific region and around the world.
