University of Guam Launches New Construction Management Program for Fall 2026
6/9/2026
Following the opening of the University of Guam’s School of Engineering building earlier this year, the University will be launching its new Construction Management program, which will welcome its first cohort of students this Fall 2026 semester.
Dr. Huyen Do is the new incoming Assistant Professor of Construction Management at the University of Guam. Dr. Do holds a Ph.D. in Construction Engineering and Management from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, as well as a Master of Engineering in Construction Management from Dongguk University in Seoul, South Korea. Throughout her career, she has gained extensive experience in teaching construction management while also contributing to the development and accreditation of construction management curricula.
In an interview with students, Dr. Do shared her excitement to “build something meaningful at an important time for the island.” With significant growth in construction activity in Guam, she emphasized the need for trained local professionals. She also noted that now is an ideal time to introduce the Construction Management program to help develop a local pipeline of talent prepared for high-demand careers. She added that she sees her role not only as teaching, but as “helping develop the future workforce for Guam and Micronesia.”
Beyond her vision for the program, Dr. Do reflected on what first drew her to construction management. With an interest in how projects are organized in the real world, she explained that “Construction Management is very interesting because it combines technical knowledge with leadership, communication, planning and problem-solving.”
However, she noted that the most exciting aspect of the field is seeing how construction projects have a direct impact on communities. “You start with an idea or a plan, and over time you see it turn into something that benefits the community such as a building, a road, a school or other important infrastructure.” She added that although the role of a construction manager can be demanding, balancing responsibilities and seeing a project come into fruition is what makes the profession both challenging and rewarding.
Students interested in this degree path can expect a program designed to prepare them for the industry demands while equipping them with professional skills. Dr. Do shared that students will learn a broad range of topics, from project scheduling, estimation, safety, and planning. Additionally, through the coursework and projects, she also sees students developing their communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Combined with internships and exposure to industry partners, students will gain both knowledge and professional confidence to enter the workforce.
Dr. Do also detailed the wide scope of career opportunities in the field, noting that graduates may work as project managers, field engineers, cost estimators, schedulers, safety coordinators, site supervisors, or project engineers. These roles exist across construction companies, consulting firms, government agencies, and infrastructure projects, with skills that are transferable beyond Guam to international careers.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Do encouraged students to explore the program with an open mind. “Guam is entering an exciting period of growth, and there will be many opportunities for future professionals in this field. If students are looking for a career where they can build meaningful projects, work with people, and contribute to Guam’s future, I believe this program can be a great path for them.”
