Thirty graduating students from the School of Engineering (SENG) completed their final presentations for CEE404/405 – Civil Engineering Design I & II – on May 16, 2025 (Figure 1). Organized into five teams, the students presented their year-long capstone projects during a four-hour event (Figure 2), supported by the student organizations ASCE and SAME.

The Senior Capstone Project allows students to work in teams on real-world engineering challenges. Students develop creativity, problem-solving, design, technical writing and public speaking skills.

This year’s project tackled a wide range of civil engineering topics (Figure 2),

  • Structural analysis and design of the GCC Wellness Center Building (Team StructuraFA³CS )
  • Analysis and design of a 3-million-gallon water tank (Team Cubic Engineering)
  • Matapang Beach Park: Clean water and stormwater project (Team JK MENS)
  • Structural design and drainage analysis of Black Construction Corporation’s Annex-C Office Building (Team MANTTRIS)
  • Sustainable Truck Wash Building for the Harmon Residential Transfer Station (Team HOPE Engineering)

Presentation topics spanned the major disciplines of civil engineering, including structural, geotechnical, hydraulics and environmental engineering, as well as construction management cost estimation, risk analysis and sustainability implementation.

The event drew attendees from across the School of Engineering, the university and the local industry both in person and online. Audience members posed thoughtful questions, and students confidently defended their designs. Poster displays (Figure 3a-e) followed the presentation and provided further opportunities for discussion and knowledge sharing.

The CEE404/405 course sequence plays a vital role in combining academic learning with professional practice. With mentorship from both academic and industry advisors, students gain first-hand experience in collaborative, real-world civil engineering.

The School of Engineering extends its sincere thanks to the following industry advisors for their continued support and invaluable guidance (listed alphabetically by last name): Mr. Thomas P. Camacho (DCA), Ms. Kayleena B. Diaz (DCA), Mr. William Flores (W.B. Flores & Associates), Mr. Terangue ‘Tiger’ Gillham (GK2), Mr. Elijah Soto (GHD), and Mr. Aaron Sutton (GHD) (Figure 4).
