USDA releases Census of Agriculture data results for Guam

6/20/2025

The 2023 Census of Agriculture for Guam has been released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The Census of Agriculture in Guam, first conducted in 1920, is carried out every five years and provides the most comprehensive, impartial agriculture data at the island level. It is the most widely used source of statistics for the nation’s agriculture industry.

“We thank the producers who gave their time to complete the questionnaire. The Census of Agriculture data tells their agriculture story,” said NASS Administrator Joseph Parsons. “The agricultural census data provides vital data that helps shape policies, allocate resources, and support the growth and sustainability of agriculture in Guam.”

Federal and local government agencies, agribusinesses, organizations, and many more use the Census of Agriculture data to support funding research and programs to improve farming techniques and equipment, building infrastructure for high-speed internet, providing effective production and distribution systems as well as natural disaster preparation, response, and recovery assistance.

Highlights from the 2023 Census of Agriculture for Guam include:

  • There were 583 farms, an increase of 319 farms since the last census in 2018. Land in farms totaled 2,848 acres, with an average farm size of 4.9 acres.
  • The total value of sales was $6.2 million, with an average value of $10,570 per farm.
  • Vegetables and melons represented the largest category of production, with sales of $2.6 million.

For the Guam census, a farm was defined as any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, in 2023.

The Guam agricultural census was completed on island with the support of the Guam Department of Agriculture, the University of Guam Cooperative Extension & Outreach service, and various USDA agencies, which provided the following comments:

"Our census team sourced more farmers this year and greatly improved our coverage of agricultural producers — in particular within the subsistence sector. This is a critical segment for Guam's data because there are hundreds of small-scale subsistence producers who sell at farmers markets, and their aggregate contribution to the economy in terms of local substitution for imports and overall island food security is significant. Our agricultural data now better reflects who our growers are, what we're growing, and where production could be better supported. Through multiagency cooperation, I anticipate even greater coverage of our agriculture sector in future Census surveys.

L. Robert Barber Jr.,
Interim Associate Director
University of Guam Cooperative Extension & Outreach

“The Guam Census of Agriculture provides an essential snapshot of the island’s agricultural landscape and the hardworking individuals who sustain it. We’re encouraged by the results of the latest report, especially the increase in the number of farmers captured. As we prepare for the next survey round, we look forward to continued collaboration to ensure even broader and more accurate participation. The COA is not just a report — it’s a vital tool for informed policy, investment, and support for Guam’s food security and rural development.”

Chelsa D. Muña
Director
Guam Department of Agriculture

"The 2023 Guam Census of Agriculture report highlights the transformation of local agriculture production. With an increased growth in farm count, it signals a powerful shift toward food security initiatives. To build sustainable momentum, there is critical work ahead. Guam will remain resilient in its food sovereignty endeavors by ensuring that pathways from the farm to the table are established, infrastructure is supported, and the youth are engaged."
