Survey workers to begin interviewing households

Residents may notice some survey workers in their neighborhoods over the next four months starting next week. The workers are official enumerators and will be surveying households in every village for the 2019 Household Income Expenditure Survey being conducted by the University of Guam Cooperative Extension & Outreach, the Guam Department of Labor, and the Guam Bureau of Statistics & Plans.
The survey workers can be identified by their official UOG safety vests and the “Household Income Expenditure Survey” signage visible on their vehicles. All will be carrying a picture ID.
They will be speaking to a total of 2,500 randomly selected households. Participation is voluntary and requires an interview of about one hour and recording expenditures for two weeks, detailing food purchasing and home food production habits. The information provided will be kept confidential, as required by Guam law. The survey results will ultimately be a compilation and will not identify individuals or households.
The Household Income Expenditure Survey serves as one of the most reliable economic data tools for re-basing the Consumer Price Index, measuring inflation, and developing the Gross Domestic Product and other key economic indicators critical to business and government decision-makers. The last time it was conducted in Guam was in 2005.
The project is funded through the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Insular
Affairs, Technical Assistance Program.
