Six University of Guam students began career-defining journeys this summer as the newest scholars of the BUILD EXITO research mentorship program. Over a five-day virtual Summer Research Academy in June, they joined more than 200 other students throughout the Pacific Rim in learning what their next three years as BUILD EXITO scholars will look like.

BUILD EXITO — which stands for Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity and Enhancing Cross-Disciplinary Infrastructure & Training at Oregon — is run by Portland State University to train undergraduates, in particular those from diverse backgrounds, to become scientific researchers. UOG’s School of Health has served as a pipeline partner for the program, adding 23 students to the program over five cohorts since 2016.

Scholars are guided and mentored throughout the program to identify their research interests, learn how research is performed and documented, build confidence, and ultimately develop a research project that addresses a health-related issue in the community. In their junior and senior years, they get up to 10 hours per week of paid research experience as well as funding support for a three-month summer research opportunity.

Recent UOG graduates who were part of the BUILD EXITO program include Fañomnåkan 2020 valedictorian Megan Gimmen, who is beginning a post-baccalaureate program this fall at Johns Hopkins University in preparation for medical school, and Brandon Datuin, who is enrolled in a doctoral chemistry program at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.
