WPTRC | Research Stations
The research stations in operation cover all of the major soil types on Guam and offer University researchers places to conduct field experiments. These experiments are designed to ensure a safe, nutritious, and affordable food supply and support the preservation and protection of the island’s natural resources. The stations are also used as teaching facilities for University classes and extension and outreach programs.
Ija Research & Education Center (established 1978) covers 65 acres in southern Guam near the village of Inarajan. Current research areas represented at Ija include horticulture, soil science, and plant pathology.
Inarajan Research & Education Center (established 1975) is located in southern Guam in the village of Inarajan with 10.6 acres available for research. Agricultural Research Technicians work closely with scientists on projects designed to improve tropical agriculture techniques.
Yigo Research & Education Center (established 1986) is located in northern Guam in the village of Yigo covering 47 acres. Research on organic waste composting is one of the ongoing projects at this station.
Yigo Research & Education Center is also the home of the Triton Farm, an integrated demonstration farm.
Misson
The Triton Farm contributes to the University of Guam’s land grant mission of “Ina” (to enlighten), Deskubre (to discover) and Setbe (to serve) by providing research, instruction, and research opportunities in sustainable agriculture practices to faculty, students, farmers, and other community members in Micronesia. The Triton Farm promotes agricultural production, sustainable environmental management, food security, economic development, and enhanced quality of life incorporating Micronesian and global agricultural wisdom as well as culturally appropriate techniques while embracing inclusiveness, fairness, and collaboration.
Goals
The Guam Aquaculture Development and Training Center (GADTC), also known as the Fadian Hatchery, is the largest and oldest aquaculture center in the Western Pacific. It was originally built as a private facility designed to produce fish and eel fry for the Asian market and was transferred to the Government of Guam in 1986 and to the University of Guam in 2001.
GADTC serves as the vessel to accomplish UOG’s mission as the lead agency for aquaculture development on Guam. It strives to support aquaculture development on Guam and the Western Pacific through research, education, direct farmer support and service.
The goals of the GADTC are:
The hatchery is a bio-secure facility on a five acre site, fully fenced on three sides and bordered by a rugged coast on the fourth side. It is only 15 minutes away from the airport by car. Facilities include an indoor hatchery with larval and artemia hatching tanks, a phytoplankton laboratory, a feed preparation room and a tool/work room. The facility also has both fresh and salt water supplies, an automatic generator back-up system, a separate office building, a duplex of two-bedroom living quarters and a refrigerated feed storage container. There are 14 concrete ponds on the site, including six 200 sq. meter Swedish ponds and four 200 sq. meter raceways. Numerous fiberglass tanks fill the area ranging in size from 0.5 to 20 metric tons. Current products of the hatchery include high-health (Specific Pathogen Free) shrimp post-larvae and brood stock, improved strains of tilapia fry and Claris catfish fry.
The University of Guam Research Station Web App user guide will help interested parties navigate and extract relevant GIS information regarding ongoing experiments and other useful information. User Guide in PDF Format
The web app is a tool for visualizing and exploring UOG’s WPTRC research stations and offers much of the benefits of using GIS maps without the difficulties associated with using the full GIS software.
This guide outlines most of what the user can do with the app and includes screen shots of the app to demonstrate the functions being discussed.
