10 simple steps to become a University of Guam student this year
So you’ve decided that it’s time to take the next step in your education. Maybe you’re fresh out of high school, maybe you took some college classes years ago but didn’t finish your degree, or maybe you’ve been working in a career and you’re ready to give yourself a leg up for the future. Nobody’s journey to a college degree is the same, but there are several steps that every future University of Guam student must complete before they start taking classes.
If you think now is the right time for you to return to school, this guide is the perfect starting place.
From preparing to enroll for classes to choosing where to grab a bite to eat in between classes, the following list will help new students ease into life on campus — for both commuters and on-campus residents. So pat yourself on the back for wanting to become a UOG Triton, grab a notebook and pen, and follow the steps below to start your college career.
Before you apply for admission into UOG, you can begin the separate process of applying for financial aid. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available in the UOG Financial Aid Office or online at fafsa.ed.gov.
Although it is not required to apply for financial aid in order to register at UOG, for those who do, it is recommended to apply as early as possible. The FAFSA is available as early as Oct. 1 of the year prior to enrolling at the University, so students don’t have to wait until they graduate from high school in order to apply. Federal aid can be applied for up until June 30 following your year of enrollment.
Admission to UOG is possible for anyone who graduated high school or passed the GED as well as for transfer students from accredited institutions. UOG’s application process is simple and available online.
Be sure to have all of the necessary information handy before you begin the process. The application fee is $52 and covers the cost of the required placement tests.
Former students or students who have only missed a semester do not have to apply online and should instead fill out a re-entry form.
International students will be contacted by the UOG International Coordinator and will receive guidance on immigration, health insurance, and other requirements after applying online.
The majority of students choose to live at home and commute to classes, but for those who want to be closer to the action or are attending UOG from off island, there are opportunities to live in the UOG Residence Halls.
These documents must be submitted to UOG’s Office of Admissions & Records directly from your former high school or college. You can access a request form through the Office of Admissions & Records to send to your previous educational institutions. Be sure to consult with your previous institution about how long it might take them to submit transcripts to ensure it will make the application deadline.
As required by law, all new students must submit PPD and MMR 1 and 2 shot records. These records can be submitted electronically to the Student Health Services Office. You can contact Student Health Services for more information.
After your UOG application is accepted and your transcripts and shot records submitted, you will be issued an official UOG Triton email address. The official UOG Triton email address is a direct link between the student and the University, so it is vital to regularly monitor the email account.
UOG will schedule your English and math placement tests, and you will receive your test dates via email. The English placement test is paper-based while the math placement test is administered electronically. Placement tests are held on campus.
All UOG students must take the annual Sexual Misconduct Training before they can register for classes. To access the online training, you will need your student ID number and Triton email account, which you will receive via email. For more information please contact moddlehelp@triton.uog.edu or call (671) 735-2620.
All new students must attend academic advisement, whether they are declared or undeclared for their major course of study. During advisement, you will receive recommendations on courses that are specific to your degree plans and placement test results. Advisement appointments are scheduled by UOG, and you will be notified through your Triton email accounts.
After advisement, you may register for classes online. Tuition and fees vary by course, and you will be notified of costs during registration. Guam resident tuition is extended to regional students from the CNMI, the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands.
Each student will receive information about cancellation policies and deadlines via email, so it is vital to monitor your Triton email account and stay on top of deadlines.
The majority of students choose to live at home and commute to classes, but for those who want to be closer to the action or are attending UOG from off island, there are opportunities to live in the UOG Residence Halls. On-campus living is an opportunity to form a community and meet other students from many walks of life and from all over the world. If living in the residence hall sounds like the right plan for you, be sure to check out the application form, fees and rules for residing on campus.
Even for those not living on campus, chances are that you will need to eat on campus. Check out all of the food options available and start making your plan to fuel yourself between classes. A meal plan card is available for Residence Hall students.
TritonGo is the UOG exclusive app that connects you to the University and special offers through local businesses just for students, alumni and employees. Download the app and let TritonGo help you stay organized and informed about campus life, your academics and news and events happening around you as a student.
Orientation is the student’s introduction to the resources of the University. It is offered for all new students during the week prior to each semester. At orientation, students meet the deans of the colleges and learn about campus life and the various academic programs and support services.
