Welcome to PreventT2!
Are you ready to build healthy new habits that can help you prevent your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes? If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes or are at high risk for developing diabetes, we invite you to join an upcoming cohort of our PreventT2 program. PreventT2 is a free program for the community using curriculum that has been approved by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and proven to prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes.
Guam’s prevalence for developing diabetes has risen from 8.6% in 2011 to 19.1% in 2021, according to World Bank Group. Guam is also among the top 20 states and territories for obesity — which has a direct correlation to Type 2 diabetes — with a prevalence of 35% to 40% of the population. An even higher number of people on island likely have pre-diabetes and may or may not know it.
Are you at RISK OF PREDIABETES?
- 45 years of age or older?
- Overweight?
- Physically active fewer than 3 times per week?
- In a family with a history of gestational diabetes?
- Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans are also at higher risk
Take the Prediabetes Risk Test
The good news is: Reversing the risk of Type 2 diabetes is possible through lifestyle modification.
Key components of the program
The CDC-approved curriculum for the PreventT2 program includes:
- Lessons in:
- Goal setting
- Weight management
- Being active
- Heart health
- Positive thinking
- Problem-solving skills
- Stress management
- Healthy eating
- A lifestyle coach, specially trained to lead the program, help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet goals, and keep you motivated. The coach will also facilitate discussions and help make the program fun and engaging.
- A support group of people with similar goals and challenges. Together, you can share ideas, celebrate successes, and work to overcome obstacles.
What you'll learn
In the first half of the program, you will learn how to:
- Eat healthy without giving up all the foods you love.
- Add physical activity to your life, even if you don’t think you have time.
- Cope with stress and challenges that can derail your hard work, like choosing healthy food when eating out.
In the second half of the program, you will learn how to:
- Enhance the skills you’ve learned so you can maintain the changes you’ve made.
- Get back on track if you stray from your plan (because everyone slips now and then).
